Estimado Presidente Obama,

Qué estupendo que usted haya sido reconocido como un hombre de paz. Sus pronunciamientos rápidos en el pasado – de que cerrará Guantánamo, de que regresará a casa las tropas americanas en Irak, de que desea un mundo libre de armas nucleares, su reconocimiento a los iraníes de que Estados Unidos derrocó su gobierno democráticamente electo en 1953, su grandioso discurso al mundo islámico en El Cairo, el haber erradicado la expresión inútil de “Guerra Contra el Terrorismo”, el haber detenido la tortura – todo eso ha logrado que nosotros y el resto del mundo nos sintamos más seguros, considerando el desastre de los pasados ocho años. En ocho meses usted a puesto este país en una dirección mucho más sana.

Pero…

La ironía de que a usted se la haya otorgado el premio en el 2do día del noveno año de nuestra guerra en Afganistán no se le escapa a nadie. Usted está de seguro en una encrucijada en este momento. Usted puede hacerle caso a los generales y expandir la guerra (sólo para obtener el resultado en demasía predecible de la derrota), o usted puede declarar que la guerra de Bush terminó, y traer a todos los soldados de regreso a casa. Ahora. Eso es lo que un verdadero hombre de paz haría.

No hay nada de malo en que usted haga lo que el individuo anterior falló en hacer – capturar al hombre u hombres responsables de la masacre de 3,000 personas el 11 de Septiembre.. PERO USTED NO PUEDE HACER ESO CON TANQUES Y TROPAS. Usted está persiguiendo a un criminal, no a un ejército. Usted no usa dinamita para matar un ratón.

Los Talibanes son otra historia. Ese es un problema que al pueblo de Afganistán le corresponde resolver – de la misma manera que nosotros lo hicimos en 1776, los franceses en 1789, los cubanos en 1959, los nicaragüenses en 1979 y el pueblo del Este de Berlín en 1989. Una cosa es cierta con respecto a todas las revoluciones de la gente que desea ser libre – ellos son los que tienen que conseguir su propia liberación. Los demás pueden apoyar, pero la libertad no llegará montada en un vehículo militar extranjero.

Usted tiene que terminar nuestra intervención en Afganistán ahora. Si usted no lo hace, no tendrá otra alternativa que devolverle el premio a Oslo.

PD: Sus opositores se han pasado la mañana atacándolo por haber traído esa buena voluntad a este país. ¿Por qué será que nos odian tanto? Tengo la impresión de que si usted encuentra la cura del cáncer hoy en la tarde, ellos lo van a atacar por destruir la libre empresa porque los centros de cáncer tendrían que cerrar. Hay quienes dicen que usted no ha hecho nada para merecer ese premio. En lo que a mí concierne, el simple hecho de que usted se ofreciera para caminar en el campo minado del odio para tratar de revertir el irreparable daño que el anterior presidente hizo, no solamente es apreciado por mí y millones de personas, sino que además es un acto de verdadera valentía. Esa es la razón por la cual usted obtuvo el premio. El mundo entero está pendiente de Estados Unidos – y de usted – para literalmente salvar este planeta. No los defraudemos.

Friday, October 9th, 2009 Dear President Obama, How outstanding that you've been recognized today as a man of peace. Your swift, early pronouncements -- you will close Guantanamo, you will bring the troops home from Iraq, you want a nuclear weapon-free world, you admitted to the Iranians that we overthrew their democratically-elected president in 1953, you made that great speech to the Islamic world in Cairo, you've eliminated that useless term "The War on Terror," you've put an end to torture -- these have all made us and the rest of the world feel a bit more safe considering the disaster of the past eight years. In eight months you have done an about face and taken this country in a much more sane direction.. But... The irony that you have been awarded this prize on the 2nd day of the ninth year of our War in Afghanistan is not lost on anyone. You are truly at a crossroads now. You can listen to the generals and expand the war (only to result in a far-too-predictable defeat) or you can declare Bush's Wars over, and bring all the troops home. Now. That's what a true man of peace would do. There is nothing wrong with you doing what the last guy failed to do -- capture the man or men responsible for the mass murder of 3,000 people on 9/11. BUT YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH TANKS AND TROOPS. You are pursuing a criminal, not an army. You do not use a stick of dynamite to get rid of a mouse. The Taliban is another matter. That is a problem for the people of Afghanistan to resolve -- just as we did in 1776, the French did in 1789, the Cubans did in 1959, the Nicaraguans did in 1979 and the people of East Berlin did in 1989. One thing is certain through all revolutions by people who wish to be free -- they ultimately have to bring about that freedom themselves. Others can be supportive, but freedom can not be delivered from the front seat of someone else's Humvee. You have to end our involvement in Afghanistan now. Your opposition has spent the morning attacking you for bringing such good will to this country. Why do they hate America so much? I get the feeling that if you found the cure for cancer this afternoon they'd be denouncing you for destroying free enterprise because cancer centers would have to close. There are those who say you've done nothing yet to deserve this award. As far as I'm concerned, the very fact that you've offered to walk into the minefield of hate and try to undo the irreparable damage the last president did is not only appreciated by me and millions of others, it is also an act of true bravery. That's why you got the prize. The whole world is depending on the U.S. -- and you -- to literally save this planet. Let's not let them down.
